Math in Mission
For Families

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for visiting our For Families page! We wanted to make this page as a source of connection and ideas for our Mission families, and for any other families who visit. Our main goals are to provide you with a weekly update and hello from Mission teachers (Camille and I), weekly math ideas to try at home, a chance to share your stories with each other through this page, and of course, some awesome resources. We will update weekly. Enjoy!

Have fun with this one and send us your ideas! I will post the next few rows next week.

Week Seven

Hello Everyone! As promised, this week we are sharing the solution to a question from a few weeks back: "How many numbers there are between -2 and 2?". Most people said 3 or 5, but we also received some very interesting answers like 30 and 40 as students were discussing how there are numbers between numbers. The answer is that there are infinitely many numbers between them. There is a number between any two numbers!

Thanks to Camille, we have another awesome video for you this week: https://youtu.be/l1-h0KaYOGs. There is so much math in baking!

Here are your activities for the week:

Inspired by my son's Kindergarten teacher, we tried subtraction on a number line outside this morning. The boys are more interested in all things school-related if we can move it outside!

Hello families! We have lots of new activities for you to try at home this week, including a great game for practicing math facts. You can see it in action here: https://youtu.be/FoVrwEb4_ao. Thank you Camille.

Don't forget to send us some photos of your family's at-home math fun! Send to rebekaah.stenner@mpsd.ca. No faces please (we want to protect your privacy).

Week Three

Hi everyone and welcome to Week 3! I hope you enjoyed the long weekend. Some of you may have tried the gardening task we posted for students to try last week. I have heard that it was a tricky one! To keep with the spirit of Spring, we thought it might be nice to also share a gardening video, made by one of our mentor teachers and her family. Thank you Camille Anderson for sharing! You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/7V4OmwPnwk4

Week One

I think more than anything, this week is about adjusting and connecting. I know for me, that means trying to figure out how to work full-time from home with two young boys at my side. The good news is that I can try out all kinds of interesting math ideas with them and then share with you!

For this week, I would suggest taking a look at the Websites Worth Exploring section of this page. Math for Love and Math Visuals are a good place to start.

Note: Every week (starting next week) we will post specific curriculum-aligned activities, tasks, and games that you can try at home. These will be organized by grade level.

Here are a few photos of what my boys and I have been up to at home over the past week or so. I will describe the activities in the photos in the coming posts so stay tuned! The egg carton pencil box was my son's idea and creation. Youngsters surprise me daily with their brilliance!

If you would like to share any photos or stories here of interesting math happening at your house, please send me an email at rebekaah.stenner@mpsd.ca.  For privacy reasons, please do not include faces in the photos. Have a great week.
